Why I Love Clay-Coated Wallpapers

There’s a reason clay-coated wallpapers are a staple in some of the most beautiful homes I’ve worked in—they bring warmth, richness, and an unmistakable sense of luxury to any room. While I’ve installed everything from silk to scenic murals, clay-coated wallpaper has a special place in my heart (and my portfolio).
The Inks are Deep, Saturated, and Lush
Clay-coated wallpapers are printed using richly pigmented inks that cling beautifully to the surface, thanks to the absorbent clay finish. You get this gorgeous depth and vibrancy that can’t be achieved with cheaper, glossy finishes. When light hits a clay-coated wall, it doesn’t reflect—it glows.

They Have a Distinct Feel—And Smell Like Quality
It might sound odd, but ask any seasoned paperhanger and they’ll tell you: clay-coated papers smell like good wallpaper. It’s the combination of artisan-quality inks and natural clay that gives them an earthy, luxe scent. It’s subtle, but it’s there—and it’s a sign you’re dealing with something special.
The Matte Finish is Elegance in a Roll
Unlike some papers that reflect light or feel synthetic, clay-coated wallpaper has a soft, matte surface that makes a space feel grounded and sophisticated. Whether you’re using it in a dining room, study, or powder bathroom, the finish reads as timeless and high-end.
They Require a Proper Foundation: Lining Paper
To achieve the best finish possible, clay-coated wallpapers should always be installed over blankstock lining paper. This creates a smooth, stable base, allows for minor wall imperfections to be corrected, and gives the wallpaper proper surface adhesion. It also enhances the final appearance by reducing seam visibility—especially important with these high-pigment papers.
They Hang Like a Dream (But Leave It to the Pros)
For a trained installer, clay-coated papers are a pleasure to work with. They trim beautifully, respond well to paste, and can be adjusted slightly during installation without compromising the finish. But because they’re so pigmented and can stretch or tear if handled incorrectly, they require a skilled hand—and a lot of experience.
Featured Favorites: Brunschwig & Fils & Quadrille

When it comes to clay-coated wallpaper, Brunschwig & Fils and Quadrille are two of my absolute go-tos. Their designs are timeless, daring, and impeccably crafted. Whether it’s the iconic Les Touches from Brunschwig or a punchy hand-screened print from Quadrille, their papers are statement-makers in the best possible way.
